Tanesco loses 56 transformers to vandals
By PATI MABUGIRA in Mwanza, Daily News
Thu, May 04, 2006

THE Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) has lost 56 transformers to Mwanza City vandals last year, suffering more than 140m/- loss, the Mwanza Regional Commissioner, Dr James Msekela, said here yesterday.

Dr Msekela said the transformers were vandalized between April last year and last month. The firm has spent over 133m/- on replacing 33 transformers, which had been completely burnt.

About seven m/- was also spent on procuring oil to refill 23 transformers, the RC reported.

“This charge does not include transport and labour costs incurred in replacing the transformers,” said Dr Msekela. He appealed to Mwanza City residents to guard public property.

Earlier on some journalists charged that the Mwanza TANESCO management was very distant from media practitioners and the city residents. Sequel to this the management could not benefit from public tippe-offs. Dr Msekela asked Tanesco officials to improve rapport with media practitioners and the city residents as part of the general effort to find a lasting solution for the transformer looting.

‘‘There is a possibility of present and ex-workers causing this damage,” the RC said.
