PM annoyed by buses overloading
By Happy Lazaro, The Arusha Times
Fri, Jun 16, 2006

The Prime Minister Edward Lowassa has ordered state apparatus and the public to be extra careful in detecting motor vehicles that are not road worthy.

He said defective vehicles and overloading are the main contributing factors to fatal accidents.

The Prime Minister was speaking at Mount Meru hospital where he had gone to console the Mulala river accident survivor. 54 people lost their lives in the Friday afternoon accident which occurred about 20 kilometres south east of Arusha.

He said commuters who were prepared to board the already full loaded buses were also to blame for accidents in the country.

Mr. Lowassa urged drivers to abide by traffic rules to avoid unnecessary loss of lives adding that passengers could also discourage the speeding drivers and report reckless ones to the police and other authorities.

The vehicle which plunged into Mulala river in Nambala village, Arumeru district was carrying 74 passengers while its capacity was only 26 persons. The Premier was annoyed by such careless packing of human beings.
